Conference Update: Agenda Set for November’s Showcase

It's not too late to sign up for the Lift and Access Showcase & Symposium, which is free for qualified lifting equipment professionals. This year's event will feature five product categories, including 15- to 18-ton boom trucks, compact and 12,000-pound capacity telehandlers, compact track-mounted aerial lifts, and 60-foot boom lifts.

In addition to product walk-arounds, which will take place Mon., Nov. 7 thru Wed., Nov. 9, the Showcase will encompass the MCM Events Crane Operator Rodeo, where attendees will be allowed to guide a load through a mock operator course; operate a range of cranes, aerials, and forklifts through paved and rough-terrain demonstration areas; visit with key component vendors and aftermarket product suppliers; and sit in on educational sessions that focus on the crane regulations, engines, the cost of rebuilding equipment, and telematics. Industry Expert Ron Overton of Overton Safety Training Inc. will help attendees sort through the newly released OSHA crane regulations, and he will discuss when a telehandler is determined as a crane and how the standards apply to the use of a telehandler when it is used as a material handler and a crane. Attendees also will learn how the new regulations affect companies that rent cranes.

In this session, Mike Vorster, the David H Burrows Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech, will compare the costs of investing in new equipment vs. rebuilt machines. Cost of labor, warranties, resale values, and tax implications will be weighed in this case study.

Vorster has taught in the Construction Engineering and Management Program at Virginia Tech since 1986. He is the author of Construction Equipment Economics and leads in the design and presentation of the Construction Equipment Management Program.
