CCO Calculator Use ‘A Complex Issue’
Responding to a request from the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association that calculators should be permitted during written examinations administered by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), Graham Brent, executive director of NCCCO, recently explained the organization's position.
“Because ANSI B30.5 does not interpret calculator use as meeting the standard's requirement, NCCCO will not be changing its policy,” he said during a meeting of the association's Governing Committee last week in Hilton Head, S.C.
Speaking from the floor, Gene Owens, a member of the B30.5 subcommittee added, “This is a complex issue.” Owens further explained that the math skills required during the CCO written exam is basic elementary-school math.
The topic is on the agenda for the next B30.5 meeting, scheduled for May 15 in Los Angeles, Calif.
