Cargotec Builds 50,000th Terminal Tractor in the U.S.

Cargotec, Helsinki, Finland, has built its 50,000th terminal tractor in the U.S. The success of the purpose-built Kalmar terminal tractors continues to grow with the recent production of this landmark unit at the company's manufacturing facility in Ottawa, Kansas.

This machine is part of an order from Safeway Inc. for 12 4×2 Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors. A customer for more than two decades, the national grocer deploys nearly 100 terminal tractors supplied by Cargotec at its distribution facilities in the U.S. and Canada. All of the units will be delivered by the second quarter of 2011.

"For more than 50 years, Cargotec has been offering world-class trailer handling solutions for port, intermodal and distribution customers," said David Wood, director of terminal tractors in North America. "We are proud to present Safeway—one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America—with the 50,000th terminal tractor from our Ottawa facility. Their commitment to innovation and creating value for their customers is something we also strive for at Cargotec, and our partnership has benefitted from this shared approach."

In April 2008, the Ottawa factory produced its 45,000th unit. It took 41years to build the first 25,000 units and less than 12 years to build the next 25,000 machines.
